To add a handwritten signature in Google Docs on a computer, open Insert > Drawing > New, choose Scribble from the Line menu, draw your mark, and select Save and Close. Then resize it, position it beside your signature line, and check the downloaded PDF. You can also insert a prepared signature image, including from the Google Docs mobile apps.

A drawn mark or uploaded image puts a signature picture on the page. To request and record another person’s signature, eligible Google Workspace accounts offer a separate eSignature workflow.

Scribble, PNG, or eSignature: Which Method Do You Need?
| What You Want to Do | Use This Method | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Place a handwritten mark in a letter or note | Drawing > Scribble on desktop | Adds a drawing to the document, not a signing audit trail |
| Reuse a signature or work in the mobile app | Insert > Image with a prepared PNG | You control the image, including its background and cropping |
| Ask someone to sign and track the request | Google Workspace eSignature | Available only with eligible accounts and organizational access |
| Apply a certificate-based digital signature | A suitable PDF signing tool and digital ID | Different from drawing or pasting a picture |
For example, a fictional acknowledgment note might use a drawn mark. A formal signature request needs a different workflow. Neither makes an image cryptographic proof of identity.
Add a Handwritten Signature in Google Docs in 7 Steps
These instructions are for Google Docs in a desktop web browser, with permission to edit the document. The menu path is Google’s documented Drawing workflow. Use a practice document and a made-up squiggle if you’re learning the controls.
Step 1: Put Your Cursor Where the Signature Should Appear
Open your Google Doc and click near the end of the text, where you want the signature inserted. If the document has a line labeled Acknowledged by:, put the cursor on the blank line below or beside it, depending on your layout.
As a hypothetical example, imagine a one-page document titled Sample Review Note. It ends with Acknowledged by: ______ and Date: ______. Leave room for the mark. This example does not sign a real agreement.
Step 2: Open Insert > Drawing > New
From the menu bar at the top of Google Docs, click Insert, select Drawing, and choose New. Google Docs should open a separate Drawing editor over the document.
This Drawing editor is not the Workspace eSignature editor. If it appears blank or unresponsive, use the troubleshooting guidance below.

Step 3: Select Scribble From the Line Dropdown
In the Drawing toolbar, find the Line tool and click the small dropdown arrow beside it. Choose Scribble.
Scribble follows your pointing-device movements rather than drawing a straight line. You do not need a text box or signature font.

Step 4: Draw a Handwritten Mark
Click and drag across the Drawing canvas using your mouse, trackpad, or other supported pointing device, then release to end that stroke. Draw additional strokes if your fictional mark needs them.
Use a made-up shape rather than copying anyone’s signature. If a stroke goes wrong, use Undo or the available editing controls. Trackpads can be less precise than pens.
Step 5: Select Save and Close
When the mark is ready, select Save and Close in the Drawing window. This is the control that inserts your drawing into the Google Doc.
To change the mark later, select it and use Edit when available. Saving a Drawing object adds artwork, not identity verification or signing records.

Step 6: Resize and Position the Signature
Click the inserted drawing to select it. Drag a corner handle to adjust its size without making the strokes unusually tall or wide. Then choose how the object interacts with nearby text.
In line treats the drawing much like a character in the paragraph. Wrap text allows text to flow around it. For some layouts, Break text may be useful. With supported wrapping options, you may also see Move with text or Fix position on page.
If those options are missing, check the document format. Google Docs limits text wrapping and image positioning in Pageless mode. On desktop, use File > Page setup > Pages for the fuller page-layout controls. Position the mark so it does not cover the date or other text.

Step 7: Download the PDF and Check the Result
Choose File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf). Open the downloaded file, not just the editable Google Doc.
Check the page number, the signature’s size, the space around it, and whether any part overlaps or gets clipped. Confirm that you downloaded the intended document version. If the placement looks wrong, correct the Google Doc and export another PDF.
This check verifies the visible result. It does not prove who placed the mark or turn the PDF into a certificate-signed document.

Insert a Signature Image Instead of Drawing One
An image helps when reusing a mark or when Drawing does not load. A prepared PNG works on desktop and in the native mobile apps.
Prepare a Transparent Signature PNG
Start with an image of a mark you are authorized to use. For a practice document, create a fictional mark in an image editor. Crop the file closely around the strokes and, if you want the page color to show through, export a PNG with transparency.
A white-background photo may leave a visible rectangle. Cropping in Docs will not remove opaque white pixels. Prepare transparency in the original file.
Upload and Place the Image on Desktop
Put the cursor near the intended signature line and choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer. Select the prepared PNG, then resize and position it using the image controls. If it’s in Drive or Photos, select that source instead.
For extra margins, select the image and use Crop. Choose In line for paragraph placement or a supported positioning option when needed. Check the exported PDF.
If the Drawing Window Opens Blank
A blank Drawing window means no mark has been inserted. Close it, confirm the Doc is editable, and consider reopening Drawing or reloading. A refresh may not solve the problem.
If Drawing stays unavailable, create an image in another editor and use Insert > Image. This bypasses the Drawing canvas but creates only a visible mark.
Add a Signature in Google Docs on iPhone or Android
In the native Google Docs mobile apps, insert a prepared image. The desktop Scribble route is not the documented mobile-app workflow.
On iPhone or iPad
Open the document in the Google Docs app and enter editing mode if needed. Place the cursor where the mark belongs, tap Insert (the plus icon), and choose Image. Select an available image source and pick your prepared signature picture. Adjust its size and inspect its position in the document.
Use a tightly cropped image and inspect the output if sharing a PDF.
On Android
Open the document in the Google Docs app, tap Edit if necessary, and position the cursor. Tap Insert > Image, choose where to get the picture, and select it. Check that the image appears near the intended signature line.
Android also has a separate Add markups feature with pen and highlighter tools. Markups are linked to nearby document content and can be shown or hidden. They are not the same as a desktop Drawing object, a reusable inserted PNG, or a Workspace eSignature request.
Use the mobile app’s image-insertion route rather than looking for the desktop Drawing menu.
Request a Signature With Google Workspace eSignature
To collect someone’s signature with records, use the separate, eligibility-dependent Workspace eSignature workflow.
Check Your Workspace Eligibility
Google lists Workspace Individual; Business Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus; and Education Plus among editions eligible for eSignature. For organizational accounts, an administrator can control access. Having a Google account or being able to draw in Docs does not automatically mean you can send native eSignature requests.
Administrators manage this at Admin Console > Apps > Google Workspace > Drive and Docs > eSignature. If it’s missing, check your edition and access.
Find the eSignature Fields and Understand the Request
In the desktop Google Docs interface, you may see Insert > eSignature fields. Google’s help also documents Tools > eSignature. Use the available eSignature entry in your account to open the field controls, if eligible.
The workflow lets a requester manage signers and place fields such as Signature, Initials, Name, Text field, and Date signed. Sending requires a deliberate Request signature action and recipient details. Do not send a request to practice the drawing tutorial.
When a request is actually sent, Google creates a signing PDF. The source Google Doc remains separately editable, while the request PDF is locked against changes during signing. After completion, the resulting PDF contains an audit trail of events such as requests, signatures, and completion. An eSignature field in a draft Doc is not proof that somebody has signed it.
If this feature is unavailable, compare free document signing tools by the records and request options you need.
Fix Common Google Docs Signature Problems
The Signature Moves When You Edit Text
Review In line, Wrap text, and other layout controls. Switch to Pages for page-based positioning. Inspect the PDF after editing nearby text.
The Signature Has a White Box Behind It
The inserted image probably contains an opaque background. Open the original file in an image editor, remove the background there, and reinsert a transparent PNG. Cropping the image boundaries alone will not make its white pixels transparent.
The Signature Is Missing From the Downloaded PDF
Confirm that the mark remains in the correct Google Doc and that you exported the right file. If it moved, was covered, or was clipped, adjust the layout and export again.
The eSignature Option Is Missing
Check your Workspace edition, administrator settings, and the desktop eSignature menu. Newly upgraded access can take time to appear, but refreshing will not make an ineligible plan eligible.
Is an Inserted Signature a Digital Signature?
A Scribble drawing or PNG is a visible mark that may be part of an electronic signature process. Alone, it proves neither identity nor file integrity.
A digital signature uses cryptographic methods and a digital ID to help verify a file. Workspace eSignature has separate signing records, but pasting an image does not activate them. Choose based on the verification you need.
If you are working in Microsoft Word instead, the controls are different. See how to insert an electronic signature in Word.
FAQ
Can I Add a Signature in Google Docs for Free?
Yes. The ordinary desktop Drawing tool and image insertion method do not require a separate eSignature subscription. You can draw a visible mark or insert a file you already have. Google’s managed eSignature request feature is different and depends on the Workspace edition and account access.
Where Is the Scribble Tool in Google Docs?
On a computer, open Insert > Drawing > New, then click the dropdown beside the Line tool and choose Scribble. Drag on the canvas to create a stroke. When the drawing is ready, select Save and Close. This is a desktop browser workflow, not the native mobile-app menu.
How Do I Add a Signature in Google Docs on an iPhone?
Prepare an image of your signature first. In the Google Docs app, open the document in edit mode, place the cursor, tap Insert > Image, and choose the picture from an available source. Review its placement before exporting or sharing. Do not look for the desktop Drawing menu inside the iPhone app.
Can I Draw Directly in the Google Docs Android App?
Android provides document markups with pen tools, but these are not the same as the desktop Drawing and Scribble workflow. To add a reusable signature picture, prepare the image separately and use Insert > Image in the Android app. A markup is also not a tracked Workspace signature request.
How Do I Remove a White Background From My Signature?
Use an image editor to remove the background from the original signature file, then export it as a transparent PNG. Insert that new file into Google Docs. The Docs crop tool can trim unwanted edges, but it does not automatically turn opaque white pixels into transparency.
Will the Signature Stay in Place When I Download a PDF?
It should be included as document content, but you should verify the actual export. Choose File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf), open the downloaded PDF, and inspect the signature’s page, size, and alignment. If it moved or overlaps text, change the Google Doc and export another copy.
Why Can’t I See eSignature in Google Docs?
Native eSignature requests require an eligible Google Workspace account and, where applicable, administrator-enabled access. The desktop menu may expose Insert > eSignature fields, while Google’s instructions also describe Tools > eSignature. If neither appears, check your plan and organizational settings instead of trying to enable it through Drawing.
Does a Google Docs Scribble Count as a Digital Signature?
Not by itself. Scribble inserts a visual drawing and does not create a certificate-backed cryptographic signature or a signing audit trail. For recorded requests, consider the eligible Workspace eSignature workflow. If you specifically need certificate-based verification, use a suitable digital-signing process for the final file.
Can I Ask Someone Else to Sign My Google Doc?
Yes, if your account has access to Google Workspace eSignature. You can prepare signer fields and deliberately send a request when you’re ready. Google then creates a PDF for signing and maintains request status information. Simply sharing an editable Google Doc with a pasted signature image does not provide the same workflow.
